SEO Process (Simple Step-by-Step Guide)

How To Do SEO for a Website (Step-by-Step)

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. According to Wikipedia, it is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in search engine’s unpaid results. In other words, SEO helps search engine such as Google or Bing find your website more easily. Sometimes it is known as “free SEO” or “organic SEO”. It is consider a natural way of ranking websites around certain topics or keywords.

93% of online experiences begin with a search engine. Of that, 68% start with a Google search.

Black Hat vs. White Hat

When looking into SEO services, there are a number of factors you need to be aware of. We all get emails or phone calls from certain firms claiming that they can “rank you on the first page in a few days”. Despite these promises, firms like this often use “black hat” techniques, which go against search engine guidelines and more often than not result in penalization.

Edward Langer Marketing looks at SEO from a long-term perspective rather than getting quick and dirty results. We implement “white hat” SEO techniques, which provide legitimate, long-term results.

Google’s Search Algorithm is Becoming More Intelligent

SEO becomes very difficult very quickly if you aren’t keeping up with the latest news and trends. In addition to major updates such as Hawk and Penguin, Google is constantly making smaller more frequent tweaks to their algorithm in order to weed out illegitimate results. If you aren’t constantly reading the blogs or watching the latest SEO videos it’s easy to get left behind.

Why SEO is constantly changing?

In the past, ranking on the first page of Google’s search results was easy. People used to keyword stuff their page titles, page descriptions, and content, build or buy hundreds of easy backlinks, and see themselves ranking on top.

Things have changed significantly. Black hat techniques such as keyword stuffing and mass back linking no longer work. While some websites may gain temporary traction from these strategies, ultimately Google will punish the site and your ranking will drop like a stone.

Google is where most people turn when they need a search engine. They want to stay in that position and to do so they need to ensure that they deliver the best and most relevant search results. That’s why they are constantly updating their search algorithm, to weed out spammy, irrelevant sites and reward sites that follow best practices.

Here is a typical SEO process that many people follow to rank their websites.

(Note: This process has been simplified to make it easy to follow for those who aren’t familiar with SEO)

Step One

Step 1: Keyword Research

Keyword research is the process of identifying the most relevant terms to a company or business. This involves uncovering not only terms that you think are relevant, but also what your potential customers are searching to find your products and services.

Step Two

Step 2: Competition Analysis

Conduct a competition analysis to find out who your competitors are. This can be done through various SEO and competitive analysis tools and software.

Step Three

Step 3: SEO Audit

Audit your current website and find your current rankings for the chosen keywords. This is a crucial step as it gives direction as to how to improve your website, as well as a baseline to see how your rankings improve over time.

Step Four

Step 4: On-Page SEO Optimization

Simply adding keyword-rich pages is not enough. During on-page optimization you will need to consider the site map, structure, code, and metadata. All these elements play a crucial role in helping to rank your site.

Step Five

Step 5: Off-Page Optimization

Link building and social shares both play a crucial role in improving site rank and establishing trust with your ideal audience.

Step Six

Step 6: Measure Traffic and Ranking Results

Continuously audit your keywords, rankings, and competition. This is a key component to your SEO strategy’s success. Study your website traffic volume and where traffic is coming from in order to update and improve upon your existing SEO strategy.

SEO FAQ

Q: What is SEO?

A: SEO stands for search engine optimization, which is the umbrella of services used to improve a website’s visibility in the search engine results by making changes and optimizations both on and off of the website.

Q: How is SEO different than PPC?

A: SEO is search engine optimization, which refers to strategies such as citations, link building, and content optimization in order to improve a website’s organic rank in the search engine results. PPC, or pay-per-click, is paid advertising where an advertiser bids a certain amount to get their ad to appear for certain search terms. Once the budget runs out or the campaign is paused, the ads will no longer show. While these are two different strategies they do complement each other, with PPC drawing people to your website and helping organic search rankings.

Q: How much does SEO cost?

A: Edward Langer offers a number of different SEO packages based on your needs and your budget. Ultimately, our cost boils down to the amount of time we spend doing the work. The more hours spent, the higher the monthly cost will be. We pride ourselves in being open and transparent about our pricing, so feel free to contact us if you have questions.

Q: When will I start seeing results from SEO?

A: There is no easy answer for this question because how soon you see results depends on a huge number of factors such as the keywords you are trying to rank for, the amount of competition there is in the market, and the amount of resources you are putting towards SEO. It can take weeks, months, or in some cases even years to see results. With that being said, it is important to remember that SEO is a long-term strategy. The results that you see will last even after the work is completed.

Q: White hat, black hat, grey hat; what does it all mean?

A: These terms all refer to different types of SEO strategies.

White hat SEO refers to any practices that adhere to search engines’ policies and guidelines to optimization. Some of these techniques including using keywords, link building, and creating SEO-rich content.

Black hat SEO is a significantly more aggressive strategy that utilizes disapproved in order to increase rankings rapidly. When black hat strategies are detected, search engines penalize the sites utilizing them. Black hat techniques include keyword stuffing, page swapping, and linking to irrelevant pages.

Grey hat falls somewhere in between the other two, with practices that are labeled as “ill-advised” but are not outright disapproved. There is still some risk of being penalized for these techniques, but it is significantly lower than it is with black hat.
